Why Barbie was a huge success?

Barbie is a star! Well, here I am talking about the “Barbie” movie. Barbie seems to exist in that sweet spot, where many positive messages were delivered that people wanted to hear or say. In today’s society, there is a strong need for such positive and uplifting content, making these movies essential for the kind of audience we have.

People seek validation, reinforcement, and support of their beliefs, especially when they are in a transformative world where women are empowered and are striving to grow each day. Women have support from the government, corporate, and media and these are transforming society much faster than 50 years back.

Barbie scoring US $356M in the opening weekend is proof that most of us are interested in this kind of movie. However, I also wonder that the popularity of this movie could be:

1. Because most of us want to escape reality and live in a fairyland at least for 2 hours.

2. Or maybe because now that we have women in better positions, they want to showcase to the world that they are equal? I don’t know why women have to work so hard to look equal to men. Can’t we just rather focus on growing/building better things in life than fighting an already won battle against Men? Well, Greta is a wise woman who achieved great success by working hard and not by fighting hard with men. She knows that most women are more interested in fighting useless battles than working smart to outgrow their suppressors.

3. Or maybe because Girls are raised to be treated as Barbie and boys want to treat them like one and this movie is just reinforcing that with a few bits and pieces of superficial maturity? So evidently people were attracted to watch this movie, wearing fancy dresses which they suspiciously loved to wear, and enjoying feminist dialogues.

4. Or maybe because naturally, girls are GIRLY and there is no harm in being that girl who wants to be a Barbie, but still they are superficially acting aggressively as they can’t withstand partiality. I am sure you have seen women acting as major propagators of patriarchy along with men. Rather, sometimes I find men more feminist than women themselves.

Whatever the reason is, it is very much required to bring such kinds of movies for most of the world’s population and it really shapes how society functions and unveils how far society has come.

But, be aware that there are some smart ones who understand that Barbie had a great marketing team, good cash to invest in fancy-looking setups & actors, and a terrific director who successfully connected with what most people desired at this point in time.
